Restoration company determines safety protocol for hoarding clean up efforts

Rainbow International® of Sioux Falls helps homeowner recover from years of hoarding

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (March 26, 2014) – Rainbow International of Sioux Falls removed items from the home of a local hoarder and inspected the home to determine what safety precautions needed to be taken for a recent TLC episode of “Hoarding: Buried Alive.”

Safety precautions for the home involved looking at the structure and severity of hoarding to determine what safety precautions and equipment were needed to enter the home. Rainbow International of Sioux Falls also inspected the home for water and mold damage that may have went unnoticed by the homeowner because of hoarded items blocking their view of the home’s structure.

“Before the film crew showed up we inspected the home and determined just what personal protective equipment would be needed to safely enter the home,” said Joe Schwebach, partner of Rainbow International of Sioux Falls. “When you are inspecting the home of a hoarder you want to check for hidden biohazards, contaminants, bug infestations and debris.”

Schwebach coordinated with local organizations for the removal of the hoarded items. Local trash services, charity organizations and Rainbow International employees separated the contents into donation, keep, and trash piles. Rainbow International employees also took part in the cleaning effort of the house cleaning the stove, refrigerator and kitchen counters.

“There was a lot of work that had to be done,” said Joel Christensen, partner of Rainbow International of Sioux Falls. “Our crew really stepped up to help out the local community member. I really appreciate everything they did to get this job done.”

The removal process took an entire day but everything was eventually sorted and on its way to local charities or to the trash.

“When you are doing a job like this the most important thing to remember is not to judge,” said Christensen. “Hoarding is a real psychological problem that requires professional help and a lot of support from family and friends. The recovery process can be slow and back and forth. You just have to be understanding and help out when and where you can.”
