Spring Cleaning: Bathroom

Spring cleaning.

If there’s one room in your home that needs attention every week, it’s the bathroom. As the place you go to get clean every morning, you want the bathroom itself to feel clean, too. A quick wipe down each week is good enough most of the time, but at least once a year, you should deep clean the space.

What you probably don’t know about your bathroom is that every surface can get germy and dusty, even the ones you never touch – such as towel racks, inside your drawers, the base of the toilet and the shower curtain rod. Don’t believe it? Bring a black light into the bathroom and see every speck of dust and grime glow brightly under the light. You’ll be appalled – and that much more inspired to take bathroom cleaning seriously from now on.

Clean Bathroom Textiles

Remove the towels, rugs, shower curtain and liner from the bathroom. Wash everything in the washing machine. To get the shower curtain liner clean, throw it in the wash with a few old towels and a splash of bleach. Wash it in hot water on the delicate cycle. Throw it in the dryer for a few minutes to keep it from dripping on the way back to the bathroom. When the curtain liner starts to get old or moldy replace it.

Get Rid of Dust and Grime

Start at the top and work your way down. First, use the brush attachment to vacuum the exhaust fan grille, which is likely very dusty. While you’re up here, vacuum the tops of the vanity light bulbs and the shower curtain rod.

Now wipe down the mirrors with glass cleaner and the bathroom counters with a general purpose cleaner. Next move on to the floor. Sweep to remove hair and dust. Give extra attention to the area near the toilet paper dispenser, since extra dust accumulates with each tug of the TP.

Deep Clean Tub and Floor Tile and Grout

Do you even know what color the grout is supposed to be? It was probably originally white, but after having absorbed dirt, soap and grime after all these months, it’s probably a dark brown by now. One option to restore your grout to its original color is to scrub away with grout cleaner and an old toothbrush. You can also use tile cleaner on the entire shower and bathroom floor, but this is painstaking.

An easier, more effective and longer-lasting option is to hire a professional tile and grout cleaning company. Professional equipment gets down and dirty to restore your bathroom tile and grout to its original beauty. Plus, a protective sealant ensures the results last for months. When you hire a professional, these great benefits come without you having to lift a finger.

Scrub the Toilet

It’s everyone’s dreaded bathroom cleaning chore, but it’s a vital one you can’t neglect. Coat the toilet bowl with a disinfecting gel cleaner. Let it sit while you clean every inch of the toilet exterior – from obvious places like the seat and underside of the lid to spots you might more easily forget like the handle, the base and the tank.

Scrub the soaking bowl with a toilet brush and flush when you’re finished. Tap the toilet brush on the side of the bowl to remove as much water as possible. Then lay the brush across the bowl to let it dry completely before it placing it back in its holder.

Wipe Down the Insides

Empty the vanity and medicine cabinet. Wipe down all surfaces with a damp paper towel. As you place things back where they go, take time to organize your bathroom supplies and throw away any expired medicine.

Test Your Work

When you think the bathroom couldn’t get any cleaner, bring the black light back into the room to check your work. Admire the improvements you’ve made and go over any areas you missed.
