How Long Should Cleaning Supplies Last?

Cleaning supplies.
Saving money these days can be tough. With prices rising faster than your paycheck, it’s often tempting to take advantage of bulk discounts, from that 5-pound jar of mayonnaise to bulk cleaning supplies. Though in some products bulk purchases can offer substantial savings, those savings can be thwarted by-product shelf life and your ability to use them while they’re at their prime, begging the question, how long will those bulk cleaning supplies you just picked up on sale actually keep?

The surprisingly limited shelf life of bulk cleaning supplies:
  • Bleach
Bleach can do a great job of lightening your cleaning load, but it also lightens in efficacy after just 6 months. This is a great one to buy in small amounts, especially if you rely on it for disinfecting.
  • Laundry Soap
Keeps 6 months to one year following opening, after which its cleaning powers decline. Check the date stamped on the cap or bottle to take advantage of detergents at the top of their game.
  • Fabric Softener
These products, which magically keep your unmentionables from sticking in your sweatshirts and towels, are only good for about a year regardless of their form (liquid, sheet, bar).
  • Multi-Surface Cleaners
Multi-surface cleaners are at their best within two years, however antibacterial/disinfectant varieties only last about one.
  • Dishwashing Detergent
Like its bleachy cousin, its shelf life is short, and it must be used within 3 months.
  • Hand Dishwashing Detergent
This has a lengthier life than dishwasher varieties, which typically contain bleach, lasting 12-18 months.
You're not saving money if the product goes to waste

When purchasing cleaning supplies in bulk, it’s essential to consider your ability to use them before their expiration date. When you pick them up, jot a date on the bottle with a permanent marker to prevent becoming the owners of an ancient (and ineffective) bulk cleaner graveyard. For jobs that you don’t often tackle, such as carpets and grout, or tough odor and stain issues, buying supplies as needed or relying on professional cleaning services offers far more bang for your buck.
