5 Natural Air Fresheners That Eliminate Household Odors

Every home develops its own scent. A mixture of cooked food, perfume, animals, old shoes, garbage cans, and much more may develop a less than pleasant odor. If you’ve tried using fruity air fresheners or spray deodorizers and aren’t having any luck getting rid of unpleasant odors, Rainbow Restoration® provides a few options on how to battle odors naturally.

Carpet

If your carpet has a musty smell, try sprinkling baking soda over it. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes, and then vacuum. The same can be done with old shoes or dirty laundry hampers.

Kitchen

Mix a few drops of lavender in a pot of boiling water to get rid of any weird odors in your kitchen. If you’re looking for more of a fall scent, try mixing cinnamon sticks in with boiling water. Fish has a strong, powerful scent that’s hard to mask. A quick and natural fix for this is to cut a lemon in half and boil it in a little water, this helps removes fishy odors and leaves your kitchen smelling fresh. If you’re having a foul odor come from your garbage disposal, sprinkle baking soda around your sink and down your drain. Run warm water and allow the baking soda to run through the drain. Repeat if necessary.

Garbage Can

Citrus, especially lemons, is a natural deodorizer. Place lemon or orange peels in your garbage cans to help neutralize bad odors. You can also use coffee grounds. If your garbage can still smells unpleasant, try cleaning it with a mixture of warm water and white vinegar.

Cigarette Smoke

Cigarette smoke leaves a lingering scent that’s hard to mask. Try putting half a cup of white vinegar in several containers and placing them around your house. If the smell still lingers, soak a towel in white vinegar and wave it in rooms around your home until the smell fades away.

Add a Natural Scent

If you’re looking for a natural, sweet scent try burning natural beeswax and soy candles. Beeswax candles look nice and will also help purify the air around your home. If you’re not looking for a fruity scent, try purchasing plants that will give off a fresh scent and also purify the air. Good plants options include: an English ivy, bamboo palm, Boston fern or a Chinese evergreen.
